FAMILY THERAPY AT THE JMC

WHAT IS FAMILY THERAPY?

Family Therapy enables family members to talk about matters in a calm and non-judgemental environment.  It gives people the time in which to discuss their problems in order to understand each other's opinions; to build up family ties and find ways to make things work for the family.

WHY MAY PEOPLE DECIDE TO COME TO FAMILY THERAPY?
Family therapy can be helpful when there are life changes, experiences or relationships that may cause upset to members of a family and family life.

These may include relationship difficulties, divorce and separation, physical and mental illness, diagnosis and disability, bereavement, school and educational problems and any other experience that is upsetting to individuals within a family.

WHO MAY WISH TO ATTEND FAMILY THERAPY?
Family therapists at the JMC work in a respectful way with all types of families and family members.  They work with individuals, couples, children and adolescents - any part of the family.  Sometimes people may also want to bring along other individuals who are closely linked to the family, such as a friend, a grandparent or a teacher.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN AT A FIRST SESSION?
An initial session is an opportunity for family members to talk about what they hope to gain from Family Therapy.  It also enables families to experience a session and ask any questions about how the therapy works.

The therapist will ask for more information to understand the family better and why they have come.  This will allow the therapist and the family to decide if this service seems right for them.

IS FAMILY THERAPY SUITABLE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN?
Family therapists welcome children of any age to therapy sessions.  Family sessions that include children are child friendly and fun.  The therapists find creative ways to get on with children of different ages, some of whom may find too much talking difficult.

There may be times that it is helpful to have an adult only session, or a session just involving adolescents, to allow some other conversations to take place.  This can be discussed with each individual family.

No one is turned away from therapy because of lack of finances.
